Once upon a time, there was a family living in Central Oregon on a
cattle and horse ranch. The little girl that lived on this farm had
bunnies and chickens. She was very interested in breeding and raising
bunnies, but she was only 9 years old and knew that it just wasn't
going to be quite the same as breeding and raising cattle and horses.
but she was determined. The little girl found bunny books to read and
finally decided she knew enough. She chose her female and male and put
them together and then daily watched the female for signs of pregnancy.
She also decided that it would be much too cold for the babies in the
outdoor pens, so she began to plan for an indoor nursery that was
acceptable to her parents. She planned and planned and shopped in the
ads in the newspaper and planned some more. Finally the big day came
and her little female produced 8 tiny spotted babies.
The little girl was so happy and excited and began immediately to put
her indoor nursery plan into action. Only a week before a calf had been
born on the ranch and it was too weak to stay with its mother, so the
little girls' mother had set up a playpen in their kitchen and placed
the calf on blankets in the playpen.

The little girl went out to the shed and found her bunny version of a
playpen, a big plastic feed tub! She filled it with sweet hay and
placed the mommy bunny and her babies with their little furry nest in
the tub. The little girl put the tub in the kitchen right next to the
Calf, her parents were surprised, but they allowed the bunny to stay.
Five days after the bunnies had been moved into the house the little
girls' mommy awoke in the night to a strange scratching sound close to
her head. She reached up and felt something very warm and furry -it was
mommy bunny and she had snuggled down next to the little girls' mommy
to sleep. This nighttime routine went on for three weeks; the mommy
bunny only stayed to sleep for about an hour and then went back to her
little nest of babies in the sweet hay.
Each time the mommy bunny had her babies she came to live in the house
in her tub of sweet hay and each time she hopped up into bed with the
little girls' mommy for a night time nap!
We are that family and our bunnies have continued to give us so much
joy and pleasure and we have so many more stories!
